TikTok users are up in arms after a video posted by one user listed the ‘worst’ places to live in London. Residents have rushed to the defence of their local areas, with the inclusion of Bromley receiving a particularly strong backlash.
User Jaydensalaam posted the video on the video-based social media platform, featuring himself lip-syncing to music before listing each area with images from local high streets to illustrate the video. According to Jayden the ‘worst’ areas to live include Wandsworth, Bromley, Hackney, Peckham, Croydon, Newham and Woolwich.
But viewers were far from in agreement about the areas, as locals rushed to defend their towns and boroughs, pointing out all the areas in the video are from the south of London. Bromley was a particularly unpopular choice, with dozens of users commenting on the video and one claiming Bromley “ain’t that bad”.
Responses included “What’s wrong with Bromley?” and “WDYM Bromley?”. One more passionate user said: “BROMLEY IS THE BEST”, while another described it as “chill”. Another added: “Bromley??? Lost it on that one. Big houses, decent transport links and one of the cheapest places to rent in London!”
Peckham in south east London was another controversial choice. One viewer, who lives in the area, said Peckham was “actually nice”, with another writing: “Peckham is good.” Another comment reads: “I’ve lived next to Peckham all my life and it’s not as bad people describe it as.” But other users agreed with Tiktoker Jayden, describing the area as “scary”.
Croydon and Hackney were also fiercely disputed. While one viewer posted: “I love Hackney”, others mentioned the prevalence of gangs and said they “knew” it would be on the list. And while Croydon seemed to be criticised by residents of other boroughs, Croydoners themselves were quick to express their love of the area.
Eighteen-year-old Jayden’s candid videos have earned him more than 200,000 followers on TikTok. This video alone has been liked by more than 45,000 people and has nearly 4,000 comments. The platform is quickly taking over as young people’s leading form of social media.
It seems more controversy is to come, however, after Jayden asked his followers: “What areas should I add next?”. So just because your area didn’t appear in this video, that doesn’t mean i’s safe from judgement.
