Boris Johnson has suffered his first resignation since the publication of Sue Gray’s report into lockdown-breaking parties as a Tory MP accused him of presiding over a “toxic culture” in No 10.

Paul Holmes, the Conservative MP for Eastleigh, resigned from his junior government role as a parliamentary private secretary to Priti Patel, the home secretary.

He said that he was “shocked and angered” by Gray’s report and that the revelations that cleaners and security staff had suffered abuse were “disappointing and unacceptable”.
