Family take in Ukrainian refugee – 10 days later dad leaves with her

A man has left the mum of his two children for a young Ukrainian refugee who lived in the family home for just 10 days before tensions boiled over.

Tony Ganett, 29, left Lorona, 28, after falling for Sofiia Karkadym who had escaped the horrors of her besieged hometown of Lviv. Tony, a security guard, initially signed up for the government’s rehoming scheme but found the progress was too slow and reached out to refugees on social media instead.

Tony, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, became the sponsor of 22-year-old Sofiia and left his partner and children for a new life shortly after she arrived. He explained to The Sun he had watched the horrific Russia-Ukraine war break out and felt a desire to “do the right thing” and put a “roof over the head of someone in need”.

Tony claimed it did not work out how he expected and his partner was not happy with the situation. He said: “I knew something was happening between us and that Sofiia felt the same – it was something neither of us could stop.”

Tony said his partner was not only upset that their two daughters now had to share a room to make room for Sofiia but grew suspicious of his very close relationship with her. Tony admitted the relationship was “flirtatious” and they were “finding excuses to touch”.

He said they used to watch TV together after Lorona had gone to bed but described the relationship as “fairly innocent”. He added: “It came to a head last Saturday when she [Lorona] really went for Sofiia, yelling at her, using some harsh language that left her in tears.

“She said she didn’t feel she could stay under our roof anymore and something inside me clicked. We’re sorry for the pain we’ve caused but I’ve discovered a connection with Sofiia like I’ve never had before.”

The dad then moved out of the family home to stay with his parents, taking Sofiia with him. The Ukrainian national said: “I know people will think badly of me but it happens. I could see how unhappy Tony was.”

A friend of Lorona said: “She’s absolutely devastated. She was with Tony for 10 years – and in the space of 10 days her family has been torn apart.”
