Alabama introduced new gymnastics coach Ashley Johnston in a brief press event Friday morning in Tuscaloosa.
Athletics director Greg Byrne said the former Crimson Tide star was on the shortlist from the beginning of the process to replace outgoing coach Dana Duckworth. Johnston, a two-time national champion as an Alabama gymnast from 2009-12, was most recently an assistant coach at Auburn.
At the podium, Johnston acknowledged her college coaches, Sarah Patterson and David Patterson and the influence they had on her career.
“As I look out and see so many familiar faces, former teammates, mentors and current members of the Crimson Tide team, I’m reminded I’m home,” Johnston said.
Before entering the coaching field, Johnston was a 10-time All-American and a crucial part of national title teams in 2011 and 2012.
